Shivdan Singh Chauhan was born on 15 March 1918 in the village ‘Bamani’ of Agra district of Uttar Pradesh . [1] In childhood, he was called by the name ‘Saudan’ by his father and the elders of the house. His father’s name was Thakur Jalim Singh Chauhan, who was a police officer. Contrary to the name, he was often a man of gentle nature; However, he also did not shy away from adopting harshness towards the criminals. Since childhood, Shivdan Singh Chauhan kept watching this dual nature of his with awe and wonder and it had a great impact on his personality formation. [2] He was sent to Allahabad for higher education where he became a leading leftist political activist of Allahabad, highly influenced by Marxism . He also became a member of the Communist Party of India in January 1936 . His father’s wish was to make him a barrister or an ICS officer, but Shivdan Singh’s extreme enthusiasm and thinking was such that in 1937, on the occasion of the convocation, he tore away his BA degree. [3] Writer’s life The authorship life of Shivdan Singh Chauhan starts from 1938 AD. The progressive movement had a deep impact on him from the very beginning. In 1938, his first book, Bloodstained Spain, was published. From then till 1960 AD, he was engaged in literature with full readiness and seriousness. After this he was often cut off from literature. Although his books were published until 1978, they were not books of direct contact with literature. Shivdan Singh Chauhan was also the initial editor of a well-known literary magazine like Critique .
